A state audit, which was released Tuesday, says the university lacked adequate controls over the cards.
The audit notes one of the employees who no longer works at the university had purchased gift cards totaling about $4,400 that were not supported by a bank statement or vendor invoice.
Auditors have referred the matters relating to the two employees to the attorney general’s office for further investigation.
