Angela Bassett and Mary J. Blige will play the wives of two of the most prolific civil rights leaders in a Lifetime television biopic Betty & Coretta. Angela Bassett will play Coretta Scott King and Mary J. Blige’s will play Betty Shabazz.
The film will follow the two women as single mothers in the aftermath of the assassinations of their husbands, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. Ruby Dee will appear on-screen as a “historical witness” to narrate the story, “as someone familiar with the events of both their lives,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. The project is set to begin shooting this September.
