American R&B, soul and gospel singer Stephanie Mills turns 56 today. She began her career at the age of nine where she appeared in her first play. A couple of years later Mills won amateur night at The Apollo theater in Harlem, NY.  After her victory she was cast in her first Broadway show, where she played an orphan child of a runaway slave in the musical Maggie Flynn.

Mills then signed with Paramount records where she released her first hit single “I Knew It Was Love”. Moreover, she played Dorothy in The Wiz, and she became a star known for her rendition of the song “Home.” which was covered by Diana Ross and Whitney Houston later down the line.
