In 2008 for reasons unknown Oakland BART police officer Johannes Mehserle pulled out his gun and shot Oscar Grant point blank in the back. The bullet went through his back, hit the ground and bounced back up and pierced his lung, killing him.
“Fruitvale Station” tells the story of what happened that New Year’s Day. This is the directing debut of filmmaker Ryan Coogler, a Oakland native himself. “I remember getting the call from one of my friends. It was horrifying, because he looked just like us, it could have happened to me ” says Coogler.
“Fruitvale Station” made a splash at this year’s prestigious Sundance Film Festival, winning both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for the tear-jerking drama. Weinstein Films soon acquired the rights for a cool $2 million.
