There are so many songs out that celebrate mom. Their usually filled with a message about nurturing love that a mother gives. However songs about father are very rare and when one is made, there usually about dad not being there. Fortunately for me my father and mother remained together. So most of these “daddy songs” don’t reflect the man I call dad. When researching my father day play list, I found it distressing that there were not a lot of songs that celebrate dad , but I did find some. Hopefully this list of songs brings back some good memories of your father, step-dad or grandfather.

Happy Father’s Day

“Dance With My Father” by Luther Vandross

Hands down, this song is probably the best known song on our Father’s Day list. It won the Grammy in 2004 for Song of the Year and its eponymous album was the last to be released before Vandross’ death in 2005. It is a song about the love between a father and his wife and child, and how the love continues even after death has taken that man out of your life.

“Papa Don’t Take No Mess” – James Brown

This song was a personal and raw reflection of Brown’s child hood. It tells the story of a father who’s both a hero and a disciplinary

“Daddy Could Swear, I Declare” – Gladys Knight and the Pips

This song paints a picture of a dad who had an un-orthodox way of showing his love for his family.

“Let Me Be The Man My Daddy Was “- Chi-Lites

One of the few songs that’s written from a little boy point of view, who wishes to grow-up and be the man that his father was.

“Daddy”- Beyoncé

This song was a ode to her then manager and father, Matthew Knowles. This song is the anthem of the all the little girls out there who just don’t know what they’re going to do when they’re daddy isn’t the number one man in their lives anymore. The song takes us through Beyoncé’s childhood and adolescence, sharing sentimental stories that I’m sure many girls remember having to share with their own dads.

“Just the Two of Us” – Will Smith

Will Smith wrote “Just the Two of Us” for the then unborn Jaden Smith. The song even opens and ends with Smith’s oldest son, Trey. In the song Smith gushes over how great his son is and all the hopes he has for his future film and music star.

If you know anymore songs that uplift fathers please post in the comment section.
