Nine Years Under: Coming of Age in an Inner City Funeral Home is an enchanting memoir about Sheri Booker‘s experiences working in the Albert P. Wylie funeral home in West Baltimore. This coming-of-age story was birthed at the death of her favorite aunt.

Booker’s grief took an unexpected turn when she was asked to take up a summer job working in the funeral home. There she did everything possibly conceivable related to the funeral business, everything but embalming. She walks us through the tales of coaching families through the process of burying an innocent child killed by a stray bullet to writing the obituary of a major drug dealer to crashing a hearse in the middle of a procession. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
