He was born in Texas, and raised in L. A.   His real name is Barrence Carter, we know him as Barry White.

As a youngster he split his time between running with the neighborhood kids and learning to play the piano.  In fact at age 12 he actualy played piano on a hit record, Jesse Belvin’s “Goodnight My Love”. Then later he got locked up for selling stolen tires.
