Gabourey Sidibe called in to The Madd Hatta Morning Show in Houston, Texas to promote her new film “Tower Heist” out in theaters today. Gabby stars alongside Eddie Murphy in the Brett-Ratner-directed-Bernie-Madoff inspired action comedy. While on the line, Gabby admitted that she “hates being called Precious” and “feels bad for girls who look like me because they’ll be called Precious.”

She also confesses that her Precious-induced stardom took her by surprise, she always thought she’d be a psychologist and work behind a desk. Check out the full audio below.

Los Angeles — At The VH-1 Divas Salute The Troops Concert, comedian Kathy Griffin referred to Sarah Palin’s daughter as “White Precious,” referring to the movie starring Monique and Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe. While it could have been because Bristol was a teen mom with a belligerent, abusive mother, Griffin was in fact referring to Bristol Palin’s weight.

Judge Refuses “Precious” Director’s Million Dollar Bail For Brother-In-Law

A Judge has refused “Precious” producer, Lee Daniels offer to bail his brother-in-law out of jail for one million dollars, according to The New York Daily News.

The director of the acclaimed movie “Precious” offered to back a $1 million bail to spring his brother-in-law from prison – but a federal judge was not impressed.

Lee Daniels agreed to sign a million-dollar bond backed by his New York condo as collateral for his sister, Leah Daniel-Butler’s husband, Henry (Black) Butler.

Butler is accused of shipping kilos of cocaine from the West Coast to New York.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Author Sapphire speaks on her book Push and how domestic violence, as portrayed in the book is relevant now in the Black Community.

Basheer Jones and the Cleveland Public Library (CPL) welcome Sapphire to Cleveland this passed weekend. Jones and CPL was honored to host Sapphire, a performance poet and writer whose novel, Push, was made into the award-winning film, “Precious,” on Sunday, October 10th as part of the Writers & Readers author series.

Sapphire addresses the criticisms of her book and domestic violence in the black community, during October- Domestic Violence Awareness Month. She also tells of her inspiration behind this fiction novel, which expresses the lives of many women to this day dealing with domestic violence and child abuse in their past.

“Precious” Director’s Sister Charged With Obstructing Husband’s Drug Investigation

The New York Daily News is reporting that the sister of “Precious” director, Lee Daniels, Leah Daniel-Butler has been charged with obstruction of justice for sneaking out guns and cash from their house in California.

Daniels-Butler’s husband, Henry (Black) Butler, has been under investigation by the feds for alleged drug dealing.

He was arrested last month near his home in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and charged with transporting significant quantities of cocaine from Los Angeles to New York.

Shortly after his arrest, officers from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department placed his home under surveillance while federal prosecutor Todd Kaminsky tried to arrange a search of the premises.

That’s when officers saw his 44-year-old wife leave the home, carrying at least one bag, and drive away in a Mercedes-Benz.

They stopped the luxury sedan and she consented to a search, according to an affidavit filed by Drug Enforcement Administration agent Steven Miller.

A loaded 9-mm. handgun, an unloaded Intratec Tec-9 handgun, several loaded magazines and boxes of ammunition were found in the bag along with $39,500 in cash.

The UK Telegraph is reporting about a controversy brewing over Elle Magazine’s cover with Precious star, Gabourey Sidibe. The magazine has been accused of lightening Sidbe’s complexion for the cover and giving her different treatment than the other young stars who also received covers.

Vanessa Williams On “The Blind Side”: “White Family Saves The Day”

‘The Blind Side’ may have earned several Academy Award nominations and a Best Actress win for Sandra Bullock this past weekend, but Vanessa Williams is clearly no fan of the movie. Williams said on ‘The View’ that the film, which depicts a homeless African-American youngster who is adopted by an affluent white family, does little to improve race relations.

Williams argued that film only reinforces the notion that African-Americans need whites in order to succeed.

“Precious” Director Begins Next Film, An MLK Biopic, With Kravitz

The cast for Lee Daniels‘ next film, Selma, is really starting to shape up. A while back there was rumor that Robert De Niro would be on board as Alabama governor George Wallace, and that news was confirmed by Movieline. Daniels now also has Hugh Jackman in the cast (announced last week) and, seemingly, Lenny Kravitz, who did good work in “Precious.”

The film is said to largely center around the relationship between Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Lyndon Johnson. Beyond the core relationship between King and Johnson, the film also features the voting rights and desegregation campaigns and civil rights marches that centered in Selma, Alabama in the mid-’60s.

While talking to E! last night before the Oscars, Kravitz said he’d been cast in Selma, as civil rights activist Andrew Young. An Alabama pastor in the late ’50s, Young encouraged African-Americans to register to vote and became a friend of Dr. King. He moved to New York, but returned to the South during the Civil Rights Movement, during which he was jailed for taking part in demonstrations. This could be a relatively large role for Kravitz, depending on how Daniels is arranging Selma. READ MORE HERE!

Mykel’s Movie Review “Precious”

Sunday’s decision was dinner and a movie at Gallery Place in DC. The weather was autumn warm with a seductive breeze. “Americas Next Top Model” and I strolled through the runway of China Town enjoying belly laughs. Deciding on a dinner location … we purposely stumbled across our favorite spot … Vapiano. The restaurant setting was just right for the vibe … a very art deco urban like flair. As much as I love DC, I was in a New York state of mind. Surrounded by lather red coaches, water fountains, plants and trendy people … we fit right in.

Lost in conversation, Greek Salads, Green Tea and Pizza, strangers seem to be drawn to the proximity of us. We begun to explore each others minds and the book “Push” by Sapphire based on the movie “Precious”. I can not say the discussion prepared me for what I was about to see … in fact, I know it didn’t … nothing could be that bad!

Dinner and two blocks later we’re seated in a crowed theatre but fortunate enough to get two end seats. In this serious adult themed movie I was reminded of “The Color Purple” but only this time Mary (Mo’ Nique) was Mister and new comer Gabby Sidibe (Claireece “Precious” Jones) was Miss Celie. Not to mention the Shug in Miss Rain (Paula Patton) you’ll see what I mean. Miss Rain’s warm genuine emotions served as the antidote to a loveless child … “Precious”.

This movie was a family horror of obesity, illiteracy and the unimaginable taboo of incest toppled with teenage pregnancy. As my friend and I laughed at humorous moments we found ourselves gasping seconds later. Sitting there feeling embarrassed and hurt that anyone would have to endure such degradation was humiliating … or just maybe too realistic. I wondered if the fat white girl beside me could relate to pig feet boiling in a pot of FAT and as she squirmed was she remembering the unwanted sexual penetration of a grown ass man between her young thighs called father and a mother’s whose hate was love turned upside down masqueraded in mental dilapidation … was she a “Precious” too?

Feeling like I needed group therapy after the movie, instead we went for a Buppie cup of coffee at Bus Boyz and Poets. My mind disturbed and my peace interrupted. How dare I not recognize the plight of another.

Even for a well known cast including Mo’Nique in her first dramatic performance, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Sherri Shepherd, Paula Patton and new to stage and screen the talented Gabby Sidibe this was a deep, heavy and perhaps difficult script.

I strongly recommend this movie and give it a Mykel Hunter 5Star ***** review with popcorn.

“Paranormal Activity”

Paranormal Activity the movie, obviously experimental. A SLEEPER not a CHILLER. Don’t waste an hour and half of valuable time following bad camera moves squeaky floors and a young couple tossing and turning in bed and all their doing is sleeping! Rumor of a sequel are you SERIOUS!!!

The scariest thing about this movie is that it has grossed slightly over $80 million with a mere investment of $15,000. Skip the bootleg and avoid it on the tube. I vote this as the worst movie of 2009!

“Precious,” Opening This Weekend!

Precious is no laughing matter for Baltimore’s own MoNique in her first ever dramatic performance there is Oscar buzz.

Issues facing some teens today comes to the Big Screen in the Tyler Perry, Oprah Winfrey “adaptation of the novel Push by Sapphire”. Newcomer Gabourey Sidibe challenged by juvenile pregency, obesity, illiteracy, poverty, and the feeling of hopelessness, captures some of the many issues cribbed by incest and parental self hate.

Precious is a sure realistic bet, a must see in Theatres Friday, November 6, 2009. Starring Mo’Nique, newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, Paula Patton, Mariah Cary and rocker Lenny Kravitz. See you on the set!
