The 2012 Summer Olympics have not gotten underway as yet and there is already drama taking place in London. Greek triple-jump champion Voula Papachristou caused quite an uproar with a racist tweet that got her expelled from the games.

While most athletes look for ways to represent their country with pride, Voula was more concerned about the effect that the increased number of Africans in Greece will have on the appetite of her country’s West Nile mosquitoes, as she Tweeted the following:

(Which reads, “with so many Africans in Greece, at least the West Nile mosquitoes will eat homemade food.”)

After initially insisting her comment had been ‘a joke’, the 23-year-old issued a lengthy apology and deleted the tweet. But she was still expelled from the team by the Greek Olympic Committee, who said her statements had been ‘contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement’.

Do you think Voula’s tweet was worthy of an expulsion from the Olympic Games?
