Baltimore is home to one of the country’s ‘most dynamic cultural and educational institutions’, the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum. In addition to their normal hours, the museum will host a series of events this February based on their 2016 theme, And a Little Child Shall Lead Them: Black Youth in the Struggle. Their message for Black History Month 2016 “will focus on that young people, ordinary, everyday youth, have been instrumental in taking up the mantle of freedom and justice.”
Some of the events scheduled include:
POP UP SHOPPING AT THE GREAT BLACKS IN WAX MUSEUM – On February 6th, local vendors will transform the Alberta Cason Ballroom into an African Marketplace complete with music, a Watoto corner, food and guest performances. Pop-up shopping is free to the public – but museum tours are regular price.
YOUTH AS FREEDOM FIGHTERS – YOUTH ON THE FRONT LINES OF BATTLE – On February 10th, a panel will discuss youth that have been leaders in the struggle for civil rights. There will also be a screening of the PBS program American Experience: Freedom Summer – documenting 10 memorable weeks known as Freedom Summer.
FIGHTING FOR CIVIL RIGHTS THROUGH CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE – Don’t miss this live performance of youth discussing ways in which civil rights have been fought for through civil disobedience on February 24th. This event requires a ticket purchase but includes a tour of the exhibit And A Little Child Shall Lead Them
