Princess Angela of Liechtenstein is the only known person of African origin married to a member of a reigning European dynasty. Wed to Prince Maximilian of the German-speaking country, the royal couple keeps much of the details of their private life away from the public.

The princess was born Angela Gisela Brown on February 3, 1958 in Bocas del Tora, Panama. Her parents primarily raised her in New York where she graduated from the famed Parsons School of Design in the city. A standout student, Princess Angela began her own “A. Brown” line after graduation before working with world-renowned designer, Adrienne Vittadini.

After meeting some years prior, the royal couple wed in January 2000 in New York before settling in Liechtenstein. Her Highness designed her own wedding dress, and wore the exact Kinsky tiara Princess Tatiana wore at her wedding to the Prince of Greece and Denmark, Prince Nikolaos.

According to one account, there was some outrage at the interracial marriage but it was approved by Prince Maximilian’s sovereign and father. The couple mostly enjoyed support from members of the European Dynasty.
