THE BUZZ!

Maryland State Board of Education elects Josh Michael as new president

Big news for Maryland schools! The Maryland State Board of Education just elected a new president and vice president. Dr. Josh Michael, a former teacher and current education non-profit leader, is stepping up as president, with Dr. Monica Goldson, a veteran school district CEO, by his side as vice president.
Hopefully this means some good things coming for our students. Both are passionate about making sure all kids in Maryland have a great public school experience. Dr. Michael wants to focus on equity and rebuilding trust in the system. meanwhile Goldson brings tons of experience leading school districts and fighting for strong policies.

During his acceptance speech Dr. Michael stated that he is the parent of a public school student and a former middle school math teacher at Booker T. Washington Middle School and Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore. He also said that his experiences as a teacher in the city shaped his career and commitment to serve families with “humility and dignity.”
And we hope they do. As the the board of education is responsible for a lot. They are the main policy-setting body for the state’s public schools and educational interests. Including hiring the state superintendent and approving the state education department’s budget.
Some potentially positive things could be on the way for Maryland students. Fingers crossed.
