Sorry, Not Sorry: The Janet Jackson Apology Controversy
THE BUZZ!
Janet Jackson Dismisses ‘Unauthorized’ Apology After Saying Kamala Harris Is Not Black—Here’s What To Know
Janet Jackson found herself in a whirlwind of controversy. This comes after an interview with The Guardian and confusion about Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity.
In the interview, Jackson said Harris wasn’t Black. Claiming she had heard Harris was Indian, and later added that she believed Harris’ father was white. The confusion got worse when a supposed apology was released on Jackson’s behalf the next day by Mo Elmasri, who claimed to be her manager. He said Jackson regretted her comments and that they were based on misinformation.
But here’s the twist! Later that day, Jackson’s team came forward, denying that Elmasri was authorized to speak for her or issue any apology. They clarified that the apology was not from Janet and that Elmasri wasn’t even her manager.
Elmasri, however, insists he was her manager, citing his past involvement in her documentary and other projects. But after the latest statement by Jackson’s team, Elmasri told the Daily Beast he had been fired by the musician “due to disagreements between me, her, and Randy Jackson, after her meeting with the Guardian and her unbalanced statements.”
And we do know that Kamala Harris whose Father is Jamaican and Mother is Indian has throughout her career recognized her Black and South Asian heritage.
So we will see if there will be another statement from Janet’s camp about her comments and about this no apology situation.
We live in a time where there is so much information but so much misinformation too. You have to do your research to not spread lies.
