Baltimore school CEO pledges close to $50M for classroom doors that lock from inside

Baltimore City Schools are getting a serious safety upgrade. A $50 million one. They’re spending spending some big money to replace over 7,500 door locks in schools across the district.
A necessary upgrade. Because, right now, most classroom doors can only be locked from the outside. Which poses a major safety risk, especially in case of an emergency. So, the district is taking action to make sure students and staff are protected.

Sonja Santelises, CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools, says the plan is to start with high schools, which tend to have more lockdowns and in most cases will require new doors and frames.
Now she didn’t give a specific timeline for when all the locks will be replaced. But she did say that they’re spending more than double the amount they usually budget for all their construction and renovation projects just on these locks.
Talk about a major investment in safety. And one that also aligns with national best practices for school shootings.
