Ban the Box
Banning the box on college applications, "ensures that every young person has a shot," Valerie Jarrett, senior advisor to the President, said.
The new initiative will increase employment opportunities for those previously convicted of non-violent crimes.
In his latest push for criminal justice reform, President Barack Obama on Monday will introduce new efforts to rehabilitate the formerly incarcerated, one of which includes banning the checkbox on employment applications that asks if a potential employee has ever been convicted of a crime.
Under the plan, the Department of Education will award up to $8 million in federal grants over three years to help support educational achievement for ex-inmates.
