Singer Jazmine Sullivan is hanging out with the Tom Joyner Morning Show in Ft. Lauderdale, FL at the Urban League Conference. Her latest album Reality Show was released to great reviews. But for a minute, Sullivan wasn’t even sure she’d be back in the music business. She tweeted a few years ago that she was giving up music as her fans mourned the loss of one of the true vocalists left.
“I was taking a break,” Sullivan says now. “But I will say I didn’t think it would be three years, four years later. I happened to be in a relationship at that time and it wasn’t good for me. You know how sometimes you lose yourself in a relationship, especially when its not good.
I kind of lost myself in the relationship. I had put so much energy in trying to make it work. But it wasn’t supposed to work. Once you end the relationship, you have to deal with whatever was in you that put you in a relationship that’s not good. So I had to do some soul searching.”
Sullivan writes most of her songs and that relationships turned up in her music. Bust Your Windows was a big hit for her, and she says, yep, it’s a true story.
“We’ve all been in a place where you wanted to get revenge,” says Sullivan. “Maybe you didn’t bust the windows out, but I did. That’s what I chose to do. But I didn’t catch no case.”
