Chrisette Michele Reveals Autism Diagnosis: “My Life Finally Makes Sense”

R&B singer Chrisette Michele opened up to fans about a recent life-changing discovery: she’s been diagnosed with autism. In a heartfelt message shared on social media Sunday (June 15), the Grammy-winning artist said she’s been taking time to process the news and unmask publicly and privately.
“I just learned I’m autistic. Official diagnosis. They used the word ‘severely,’” Michele wrote. “I’ve been quiet on here. But… I’ve been outside. Singing… but learning to strip the mask. One show at a time. (The irony). Just… coming to grips with a lot and giving myself room to take it all in.”
She went on to share how the diagnosis has helped her make sense of past struggles: “My life and its challenges finally make sense. So so much sense. Autistic. Would you get a load of that… I’ll talk more soon. Just wanted to say hi… from stage side.”
Fans quickly responded with an outpouring of love, support, and shared experiences. “Neurodivergent babes unite,” one fan commented. Another added, “There’s so much freedom in knowing… the shedding of the mask felt immediate. We are free.”
Michele performed in Atlanta the same night as her announcement, opening for Anthony Hamilton. She’s also been active on her self-titled podcast. Her last album, Out of Control, dropped in 2018, a year after she faced public backlash for her controversial performance at Donald Trump’s inauguration.
Reflecting on that decision in a 2017 Billboard interview, Michele said, “I thought it was almost my responsibility to not just say yes but to say yes with purpose… I felt committed to making sure I stood up for the women, the minorities, and communities who felt disrespected.”
Now, as she begins this new chapter, Michele is stepping into her truth, unmasked and unapologetically herself.
