Orlando’s Machine Gun America park opened for business this past weekend. The attraction offers 10 firing lanes and military simulators. Guests are monitored by instructors called “range safety officers.”

Those guests ages 13 to 17 who wish to use the heavy weaponry must be accompanied by an adult.

“Most of these are not eligible to be owned by an individual,” commented Bruce Nierenberg, Machine Gun America’s general manager. “They’re built for wars and those kinds of things.”

The space offers Uzis, Tommy Guns, AK-47’s and even M5’s.

Of course, with the recent proliferation of mass shootings across the country, a crucial question arises: Is opening a gun park promoting further violence and America’s “gun culture?”

“You have to wonder about the mentality of parents who would let their child fire a military-style rifle at such an establishment after what happened at Bullets and Burgers,” said Ladd Everitt, director of communications for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.”

Bullets and Burgers was the Nevada-based company that took a 9-year-old girl to shoot a semiautomatic Uzi at a gun range in August. The girl lost control during her training session and accidentally killed her instructor.

Nirenberg dismissed that incident as negligence on the range itself.

“Good safety procedures were not followed,” he said, noting the girl’s age and size of weapon she was using. “There’s some common sense involved.” He added that most anti-gun people just don’t understand firearms.

“Weapons have been a part of life and it’s been a part of civilization, the rise and fall of civilization, and quite frankly we’ve needed firearms to defend our freedoms,” he said. “It’s directly related to the fact that we’ve been able to acquire our freedom and defend it.”
