Black History Month starts next week, and there are so many things you can do to celebrate right here in Baltimore and the surrounding areas.
While the B&O Railroad Museum will be closed for renovations from February 1st through 7th, they will reopen on February 8th with “Celebrate Black History at the B&O” – an exhibit celebrating the contributions of African Americans to the railroad industry. Come “learn about these men and women who filled vital jobs along the B&O Railroad’s line and understand how significant social issues, such as segregation, affected railroading.”
Plus – the “new exhibits focus on African American passenger travel during segregation and chefs and waiters who worked on B&O dining cars.”
Also, on February 13th, you can check out “Historic Roundhouse Turntable Demonstrations“. “Ever wonder how locomotives and rail cars are moved in and out of the historic 1884 B&O Roundhouse? Watch museum staff operate the 60 foot wooden turntable to move a historic rail car.” Demonstrations begin at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Finally, on February 28th and March 1st, you can take a Special Train Ride as the B&O celebrates its 132nd Birthday! On these days, the museum “will offer a special weekend of train rides (weather permitting) and highlight educational programs on both the birth of the oldest railroad in America and the 1884 Roundhouse. Half-price admission for all visitors! With paid admission, train rides are $3 for adults, $2 for children (2-12) and free for B&O members”
