Simone Manuel, 20, made history last night by becoming the first African-American woman to win the Olympic swimming gold medal. While we know she is an amazing swimmer, there is so much more to know about her.

She began swimming at the young age of 4.

Her parents wanted her to learn how to be safe in the water, but it became something she grew to enjoy and love.

Manuel was raised in Sugar Land, Texas.

But is a student at Stanford University in California, where she is a member of the Cardinal swim team.

She’s a huge LeBron James fan.

When James and the Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA Championship this year, she posted on Instagram that he is the greatest man in the NBA.

Manuel is the youngest sibling and has two older brothers.

In a recent interview, she talked about how growing up and watching them play basketball helped her become so competitive.

She shares the gold.

She and her Canadian counterpart, Penny Oleksiak, touched the wall at the same time and set a new Olympic record of 57.20 in that event.
