April's Thought of the Day

Source: April Watts / April Watts

I was watching the news and saw a Muslim woman of Middle Eastern descent protesting. She gave hand gestures and said, “I’m unapologetically Muslim all day every day.” I don’t know that woman or anything about her but watching her sparked a larger thought. As I look around, I see the profound impact of African American culture on American culture. Everybody wants to walk black, talk black, look black, act black–swagger jack–without actually BEING black. Why does America love everything about black people EXCEPT black people themselves? You can’t take my culture and discard me. (Disclaimer:  I am very much aware that black people are not a monolith.)
