After three hours of deliberation, a jury has found 16-year-old Jaylen Prince guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of 15-year-old Warren Curtis Grant.

The incident occurred on September 6, 2024, at Joppatowne High School, when deputies from the Harford County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a shooting inside the school. Grant was discovered in a bathroom with a gunshot wound and was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he later died despite life-saving efforts.

Following an investigation, Prince was identified as the suspect and arrested just 20 minutes after the shooting, thanks to a tip from a neighbor who reported a suspicious individual attempting to break into a home nearby.

During the trial, witnesses testified that Prince followed Grant into the bathroom to confront him about a disagreement involving a female student. One witness, who was present during the altercation, recorded video footage showing Prince threatening to kill Grant multiple times before pulling a gun from his backpack and shooting him. Prince then fled the scene and discarded the weapon, which authorities have not recovered.

The eight-day trial concluded with Prince being convicted of first-degree murder. He was charged as an adult.

“This verdict delivers justice for the family of Warren Curtis Grant,” said State’s Attorney Alison M. Healey. “At just 15 years old, his life was taken far too soon in a place meant to be safe for all students. There is absolutely no justification for a 16-year-old to bring a firearm into a school. This case sends a clear message: adult actions that result in the loss of life will carry adult consequences.”

Prince is scheduled to be sentenced on September 2, 2025, and faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment plus 28 additional years.
