Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a 30-year-old man at North Branch Correctional Institution in Allegany County.

Elias Alvarado, who was serving a life sentence for murdering two women in 2016, was found unresponsive Friday and pronounced dead by first responders.

Investigators identified another inmate as a suspect in connection with Alvarado’s death, though no charges have been filed. Police have not released the suspect’s name, citing the ongoing investigation.

According to state police, Alvarado was last seen standing with another man on the tier where he was housed. Officers later found him lying on the floor of that same tier, unresponsive. Police have not disclosed how he died.

Alvarado was convicted in 2017 of killing two women in Baltimore. Court records show he strangled 35-year-old Ranarda Williams and 48-year-old Annquinette Dates just six days apart in September 2016. In the first case, police found him standing over Williams’ body on Dolfield Avenue. DNA evidence later linked him to Dates’ killing, whose body was found behind a Northwest Baltimore townhome.

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services’ Internal Investigative Unit notified state police of Alvarado’s death on Friday. Both state police and the corrections department declined to provide additional details while the investigation remains active.
