Ten people required medical attention, five of them hospitalized, after dangerously high levels of carbon dioxide filled a poultry processing facility in Southwest Baltimore on Sunday afternoon, according to the Baltimore City Fire Department.

Dozens of firefighters and emergency personnel responded to the scene at Holly Poultry, a longtime Baltimore-based meat distributor, as crews worked into the evening to identify the source of the leak.

Fire department spokesperson John Marsh said all five hospitalized individuals suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Five others were treated at the scene by medics.

Outside the facility, located off Washington Boulevard, truck drivers and employees waited as fire engines, ambulances, and hazmat crews lined the street.

Holly Poultry, which has been operating in the city for decades, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
