Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) says it distributed $15 million in financial assistance to customers across central Maryland this summer through its Customer Relief Fund.
According to the company, 30,955 households in its service area received bill credits ranging from $250 to $750. The fund, first announced in June, was designed to help offset rising utility costs for residents.
Rising Energy Costs in Maryland
Marylanders have faced steadily increasing energy bills throughout 2024. In January, BGE implemented a scheduled rate hike that raised the average residential gas bill by 9% and the electric bill by 7%.

But costs didn’t stop there. In June, electricity bills rose again by an average of $16 due to higher capacity auction prices and fees tied to Talen Energy’s reliability-must-run (RMR) charges. Another increase followed on September 1, when PJM Interconnection — the operator of the regional power grid — conducted its own capacity auction.
State Assistance Efforts
To provide additional relief, Gov. Wes Moore announced earlier this month that $200 million from Maryland’s Strategic Energy Investment Fund will be distributed directly to residents. Every household in the state will automatically receive two credits on their utility bills.
Between BGE’s $15 million contribution and state-level aid, tens of thousands of Maryland families are seeing short-term relief, even as energy costs remain on the rise.
