In November, Maryland voted for same-sex marriage, also supported by The Mayor and approved by The General Assembly.

The new law went into effect New Years Day (Tuesday, January 1, 2013).  Maryland’s  first 2013 same-sex weddings took place at City Hall with an awaiting crowd of cheers.

Congratulations to James Scales and William Tasker in their  same-sex ceremonial marriage at Baltimore’s City Hall, officiated by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. Scales, a longtime employee/manager in the Mayor’s office beginning with William Donald Schaefer. After the vows were read and rings exchanged the crowd erupted in cheers.

“It just means a lot to be able to spend the rest of our lives together, and legally,” Scales,  who has been with his partner for 35 years, has already made a lifetime commitment. Now they may receive some of the same legal benefits entitled to any other married couple. But, there is still more work to be done!

Staff was on hand to make sure all couples could make their relation officially legal through marriage. As did Darcia Anthony and partner, Dani WilliamsIt’s about so much more than us, it’s about our friends, just the people who have been there for us through the good and the bad. It’s about celebrating our love.”
