While Carrie Bradshaw was kicking it with her girls in an unrealistic world, Joan Clayton and her girls, Toni, Maya and Lynn were keeping it real in LA. Fifteen years ago today, Mara Brock Akil’s Girlfriends premiered on UPN. It was a striking show not only because the cast featured Black women, but also because their experiences were a lot more relatable in general.

Joan was a neurotic type A mess, but she had a heart of gold, and loved her friends fiercely. Toni was selfish, but she always kept it real (sometimes too real). Lynn was the lovable free spirit, and Maya was balancing her life as a mom, wife, and still building up her career (because you know her ultimate goal was to release her book, Oh, Hell Yes!).

There are so many moments to choose from, like when picky Toni ended up marrying the total opposite of the man of her dreams after learning important lessons about life and love, or when Saul Williams guest starred as Lynn’s boyfriend and forced her to be celibate, or when Joan and Toni had a major falling out (but eventually made up).

Get in to these videos we found. It’s a celebration!
