Maryland Teacher Sues School/Principal After Alleged Racism Accusation
THE BUZZ!
A high school teacher in Maryland, is suing his school and principal after being accused of racism. Now this all stemmed from a seating chart dispute that blew up and has lead to a lawsuit.
He was a health and English teacher, and also the head coach of the rowing team at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Montgomery County. Back in February 2023, two students in his class—who are Black—wanted to sit with friends instead of in their assigned seats. The teacher asked them to return to their spots because he was using a seating chart to learn names and avoid confusion.
The students later reported that the teacher said something like he couldn’t tell them apart. A comment they believed was racially insensitive. Long story short. The principal then sent a school-wide email calling it a “hate bias incident involving several African American students. The teacher wasn’t named, but says everyone knew it was about him.
After an investigation no evidence was found that he did make the comment. By then though the damage was done. He was shut out, mentally drained, and even had to go on disability leave. Eventually he transferred schools and lost his coaching job too. He claims his reputation as a teacher and mentor has been damaged. And the legal fight has cost his family over $300,000.
Now, he’s fighting back with a lawsuit.
