PIECE OF MARS IS UP FOR SALE. BUT THE PRICE TAG IS OUT OF THIS WORLD.
THE BUZZ!
There are a lot of people who are collectors. And they can collect all kind of things. But if you ever wanted to own something out of this world. Well you had a chance to do so. If you had enough money to buy it at auction. I’m talking about a 54 pound rock named NWA 16788. It’s the largest piece of Mars on Earth. And now, also the most expensive meteorite ever sold at auction. After a 15 minute bidding war the space rock found a home with a winning bid of $4.3 million. Adding various fees and costs, the official sale price was $5.3 million.
The rock was found by a meteorite hunter, didn’t even know that was a thing, in the Sahara Desert. But they say these rocks are rare because most of them burn up before reaching Earth. And this one is 70% bigger than any ever found.
Just FYI – that wasn’t the only big sale item at that auction. An “exceptionally preserved” Ceratosaurus, one of only four such dinosaur skeletons known to exist, sold for a colossal $30.5 million.
I guess that’s a little different than collection happy meal toys. And a lot more expensive too.
