The Baltimore Orioles went into Toronto on Friday, September 13th in desperate need of staying in contention for a possible wild-card playoff position. After splitting the first two games with the Blue Jays, the O’s emerged victorious in the critical third game of the series, defeating the Jays, 3-1. The victory left the Orioles 2 1/2 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers in the wild-card race. Oriole starting pitcher Miguel Gonzales pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up 1 run on 6 hits before leaving the game with soreness in his pitching arm. He was replaced by rookie pitcher Kevin Gausman. Gonzales was aided by a 2-out 3rd inning 2-run double by Oriole designated hitter Danny Valencia. Those runs proved to be all the O’s would need to outscore the Jays. Oriole closer Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless 9th inning to record his 45th save in 54 save opportunities.
