The Buzz: Interesting Headlines & Stories
Salt-N-Pepa are making noise again, this time, it’s in a courtroom.
THE BUZZ!
The legendary hip-hop duo just filed a major lawsuit against Universal Music Group. They’re saying the label is blocking their legal right to reclaim ownership of their music. Under U.S. copyright law, artists can take back control of their masters after 35 years, and Salt-N-Pepa officially made that move in 2022. But instead of handing over the rights, UMG allegedly yanked their songs off U.S. streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. Now they’re taking it to federal court, accusing UMG of retaliation and trying to silence their legacy. This fight comes just as Salt-N-Pepa are getting inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this November, making them only the second female hip-hop act to ever receive that honor.
They say this isn’t just about contracts, it’s about legacy, justice, and making sure artists have the power to own their work.
We’ll be watching this one closely. It could pave the way for a lot of other artists going through this same thing.
