Large police settlements cannot replace the loss of loved ones and often do little to deter police behavior. A report from Five Thiry-Eight and The Marshall Project documented the millions paid out by cities annually and the difficulty with holding police departments accountable.  

The Colorado police officers and paramedics involved in the death of Elijah McClain more than two years ago were indicted in an unexpected ruling from a grand jury that aims to hold them accountable.

The parents of Elijah McClain, a slain 23-year-old Black man from Aurora, Colorado, recently filed a lawsuit against the city, the Aurora Police Department, and medical officials, after he was violently detained on August 24, 2019.

McClain went into a coma and died after police in Aurora placed him in a violent chokehold.
