Baltimore City’s first student newspaper: A new voice is rising in Baltimore City schools,
THE BUZZ!
First Baltimore City student newspaper plans to expand this school year
Back in town.
It is almost back to school time and one thing to look forward to this school year: The JM Tribune, Baltimore City’s first student-run newspaper. It is back and its even better. Led by a passionate trio of seventh graders. Not only talented writers and editors, but also skilled web designers. The newspaper covers a variety of topics, from student life to school issues.
Renee Samuel, the Gifted and Advanced Learning coordinator at James McHenry Elementary\Middle School, called the paper a passion project. One geared toward middle schoolers, but parents can read it to their kids at home.
And it should only get better with more help. She said that after the first edition was printed this past spring, there has been a lot of interest from other teachers. And she is hoping to invite more students as eighth-grade leaders and open the newspaper up for sixth- to eighth-grade students as well..
Her goal is to have the newspaper publish quarterly and advance some of the content to long-term submissions.
So big shout to those amazing students and future journalists to the teachers and all those who support kids like this.
That’s wassup.
